NASTF Fall General Meeting in Las Vegas

The National Automotive Service Task Force (NASTF) will hold its Fall General Meeting on Sunday, Oct. 10, at 1:30 p.m. in Las Vegas at the Mandalay Bay Convention Center, Room South Pacific C. This year's fall meeting features the usual committee updates, along with a panel discussion titled "Maximizing the Value of the SDRM." The Secure Data Release Model (SDRM) is currently used to access secure data such as key codes and pin codes. In addition, there will be a special report on progress by the Canadian CASIS group to establish a similar process of ensuring information availability in Canada. More

California legislature sends Smog Check bill to governor

The California State Assembly has agreed to state senate amendments to California Act 787, the “Smog Check: Vehicle Repair and Assistance Program.” The amendments change the requirement to pay the owner of a motor vehicle that has failed its most recent smog check inspection a minimum amount of money for the retirement of his or her motor vehicle. It would also make the repair assistance program available only to specified low-income individuals. More

Ford recalls 463,000 Windstar Minivans on axle-fracture risk

Ford Motor Co. said it is recalling 575,000 Windstar minivans in the U.S. and Canada because rear axles may corrode and break. The voluntary recall affects 1998 to 2003 model-year Windstars in areas where road salt is used in cold weather, according to a notice on the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration's website. Pennsylvania Rep. Matthew Bradford, D-District 70, has introduced a bill to penalize fraudulent practices regarding airbag installation and reinstallation. In addition, the Motor Vehicle Fraud Prevention Act states that anyone aware of the fact that they are selling or trading an inoperable airbag must notify the person they are selling or trading to by written confirmation. Should cars warn when there's a child inside on hot days

Safety advocates are urging Congress and regulators to force carmakers to install warning systems that would prevent distracted parents from leaving children in cars, preventing heatstroke deaths. At least 41 children have died already this year in hot cars, more than any previous year at this point. August was the deadliest month on record, according to the advocacy group Kids and Cars. More

Government investigating steering in Hyundai Sonata

The government has opened an investigation into possible steering problems in the 2011 Hyundai Sonata. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said it had received field reports alleging the separation of a joint that led to a complete loss of steering in the sedan or a loosening of a joint connection in the steering.
