DentBetty.com allows car owners to upload photos of their damaged cars and receive online bids for repairs from area garages. Launched in San Francisco in July and Boston last month, the service is free, although DentBetty hopes to expand nationally and eventually start charging repair shops a small subscription fee. More
Dumped GM, Chrysler dealerships find new life
The Tennessean    Share   Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
For the past nine months, the salespeople in the showroom of Team Chevrolet in Smyrna, Tenn., have greeted potential customers, shown them the new cars on the lot and answered questions about the vehicles. What they haven't done is sell cars. The dealership's former owner filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy reorganization in late January, and all of the new and used vehicles on the lot were put under the control of GMAC Financial Services, which held liens on the dealership's inventory. Crash alert systems for the rest of us
The Detroit Free Press    Share   Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Most drivers have been humbled by a blaring horn after drifting out of his or her lane, or felt frazzled while slamming on the brakes to stop short of a crash. So far, the high-tech safety features that can prevent these kinds of mistakes have been available mostly on luxury vehicles. But the sensors and cameras that make so-called active safety features such as lane-departure and front-collision warnings possible are becoming more affordable, and automakers see a wide use for them across their lineups. Troubleshooting driveability issues: Is the engine healthy?
Motor Age    Share   Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
The miss was just barely apparent at idle. As soon as the throttle plate was opened, even slightly, the miss went away. Out on the road, the engine performed perfectly at any speed, under any load. The culprit turned out to be a burnt exhaust valve on the rear bank of this Chrysler minivan causing just a slight loss of compression, but I didn't find it until I had nearly exhausted all other possibilities, said Peter Meier, an ASE-certified Master Technician. Surprise! Buying American still matters
CNN Money    Share   Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Support the U.S. economy. Buy American. Sounds simple enough. But in a world where a Ford Fusion is built in Mexico, and a Toyota Camry is manufactured at a plant in Kentucky, the lines get blurred. As American car companies are spreading more of their work overseas, Asian and European automakers are bringing more of their work here. So where is your money really going when you buy a car? More
