The Associated Press via Google News    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
The U.S. auto industry will recover only a little next year, weighed down by high unemployment and other troubles that will continue to limit economic growth, a top industry analyst said. Fitch Ratings analyst Mark Oline predicted that sales will rise to 11.1 million cars and trucks next year, a 7.8 percent increase over the 10.3 million he expects for 2009. More

Auto body shops win $15 million from insurer
The Hartford Courant    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Auto repair shop owners in Connecticut celebrated a victory in a six-year battle against The Hartford, winning a $15 million jury award in a dispute over appraisals and labor costs for fixing damaged vehicles. A Superior Court jury in Stamford sided with the Auto Body Association of Connecticut in a class-action lawsuit that accused Hartford Fire Insurance Co., part of property casualty giant The Hartford Financial Services Group, of unfair trade practices that led to artificially low labor rates in damage appraisals. Bad times can be good business for some
KHBS-TV    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
They say that one man's trash is another man's treasure, and the recession has made that very true for some small businesses in the U.S. With unemployment at a 25-year high, many small businesses around the country have found themselves losing customers and having to close down. The ADP Small Business Report reported that 284,000 small business jobs were lost in March. More

New cars can keep you alive—and keep you pinned inside
KVUE-TV    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
VideoBrief
In the front of the car, the engine, the bumper and hood absorb the impact of the crash. In the rear, the trunk and rear bumper serve the same purpose. Typically, passengers have the least amount of protection on the side of the vehicle, protected only by the steel beams in the door and in the posts. Responding to the diminishing number of front and rear-end fatalities coupled with the increase in side impact deaths Congress issued new safety guidelines in 2005 giving automakers less than a decade to improve cars in the event of a side impact. Lawmakers quickly adopted side curtain airbags as one solution to the problem.

Fewer 2010-model vehicles pass tougher safety tests
The Wall Street Journal    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Shoppers looking to buy the safest 2010-model cars will have 67 fewer choices this year than they did in 2009. That's because the test for safety ratings got a lot tougher. A new roof-strength requirement aimed at protecting passengers in rollover crashes cut the number of top-rated vehicles to 27 for the 2010 model year, compared with 94 in 2009. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety added the roof test to the already-rigorous tests it uses to address increasingly specific circumstances under which drivers and passengers are injured and killed in collisions. A Chinese-owned GM, it could happen
CNN    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
GM could one day be Chinese owned. A shocking concept for the ultimate all-American company but one some auto industry experts say isn't too far-fetched. "I can tell you right now the Chinese are shopping heavily in the U.S. auto sector," said David Cole, chairman of the Center for Automotive Research, a Michigan think tank. Cole said such a deal isn't imminent and wouldn't happen until GM starts selling shares to the public again, likely a year or more from now. But he says buying GM would be a major opportunity for the nascent Chinese auto industry. More

Earth-friendly body shop
The Pioneer Press    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
When Minnesota's Mike Schoonover overhauled the painting booths in his Schoonover Bodyworks collision repair shops in Shoreview and Stillwater last year, he picked one of the toughest Decembers in which to spend a pile of dough. But December 2008 brought freezing rain and icy roads, which led to more serious accidents. And that meant more cars written off by their owners' insurance companies as total wrecks — good for junkyards but bad for the auto-body business. "I've never seen so many cars totaled in my life," he recalled.  More
